Many students with disabilities are underestimated due to outdated beliefs or visible differences. This presentation challenges those assumptions, emphasizing the importance of presuming competence. Traditional education systems are often built around outdated models that prioritize standardization over individualization, compliance over creativity, and efficiency over equity. But special education offers a powerful, often overlooked blueprint for reimagining what education can—and should—be. In this talk, we examine how inclusive practices such as differentiated instruction, universal design for learning (UDL), collaborative problem-solving, and individualized support can serve all learners, not just those with disabilities.
