Communicating and collaborating with others at home and abroad requires intercultural competence. Learn about multiple layers of culture, such as national, regional, generational, professional, or corporate culture as well as personality, and how we subconsciously acquire culture. Recognizing your own culture and that of others, understanding the differences, and stretching your comfort zone allows you to communicate successfully across cultures. This is beneficial for working with an international clientele or working on diverse teams. Intercultural competence is relevant for many areas of business, such as prospecting, negotiating, scheduling, meetings, agreeing and disagreeing, decision making, problem solving, giving and receiving feedback, conflict management, leading and motivating employees, or building trust and relationships. Relocating to a foreign country can be daunting. In addition to getting a visa, the logistical part at home (packing boxes, shipping your furniture overseas, selling your car, etc.) and abroad upon arrival (new drivers license, new house, new car, utilities, necessities of life, etc.), there is an even bigger intangible part to relocations that pose a challenge to expats and is often the source of culture shock. This part includes the dos and don'ts in your new country, values, norms, traditions, and cultural differences in behavior and communication. In this presentation, you will learn how you can prepare yourself before you embark on this adventure, how you can get adjusted after arrival, and what you can do to alleviate culture shock. This presentation will also include the dangers of repatriation culture shock, a variety of scenarios to learn from, and hands-on tips on how to master your expatriation and your repatriation.
